(More customer reviews)The Singer Futura machine is everything it claims to be. It is computer operated and totally intuitive but you must be minimally computer savvy. You can buy a guaranteed used computer for very little money. The multiple stitch sewing functions and surger are, however, independent of the computer. I am an 82 year old male and decided to do this as a hobby and discovered that sewing skills are not required for the embroidery function You will find that all malfunctions are operator errors so follow the instructions closely they are mostly pictorial with little text. The potentials of this Singer are such that if you don't get the added software package (sometimes offered with the same machine price) you are missing out on the most creative part and you will be confined to the 3600 provided designs. Some of you may find this sufficient especially since many more designs are promised through the internet. It is however the Autopunch software that gives you this great freedom. You can change any image into embroidery designs and therein is the power of this Singer. Being also a photographer I use Adobe Photoshop software to manipulate or alter the image which is what you may have to do to get Autopunch to make any sense of it; other software may apply. For fabric stabilizers try to use some closed weave stiff fabric. You can also try spray-on starch. To put designs on terry cloth you need to use the water soluble stabilizer on top otherwise the loops of the fabric become entangled in your design making it look untidy. Save the torn away stabilizer and dissolve it in water and use it also as paint-on stabilizer. Start with single color designs until you get proficient at threading the machine which is what you will be doing a lot. I was fully operational in one week's time. Tailors or seamstresses not familiar with computers should team up with a computer savvy friend or family member (most of them are) and together you will share the great joy of automated embroidery.

Singer CE-100 Futura Sewing and Embroidery Machine Review

(More customer reviews)What makes this product so attractive is that by connecting it to a computer you can get an endless amount of embroidery designs. It is also a full feature sewing machine.
I bought this item for my wife's birthday. It does everything that is advertised. The sewing functions are straight forward, and everything worked as it should.
The embroidery isn't as staight forward. The instructions are very poor, and limited. Although I have to admit, that I figured most of it out fairly quickly. The embroidery is slow, and of course you have to change thread for every color change in your pattern. The designs came out looking good. I also downloaded some free designs from other sites, and they worked just as well.
My problem with this machine is two fold. The one we bought broke after only a few hours of use. It was a minor problem. The bobbin holder had a crack where the tension screw goes in. At first everything was fine, but within a few hours the thread started catching in the crack until it was unusable. I'm sure that this won't be a problem for most customers.
The second problem is much more severe in my opinion. No one has parts for the machine, and it's near impossible to even get a parts list. One item that doesn't come with the machine that my wife wanted was a zipper foot. The part number for that item was listed in the book, but when I went to find it, absolutely no one had it. I even wrote Singer's part's department, and they wrote back telling me to call.
It's a neat machine. As long as you get one that works, and aren't concerned about parts availability, I don't think you can find a better ebroidery machine for less money.

Singer Quantum XL-5000 Sewing and Embroidery Machine FS Review

When I bought this machine (four years ago) I thought it would be fantastic to own one machine that would do both sewing and embroidery, and it's made by Singer! One of the reasons I THOUGHT this would be a great machine at the time is because it's updatable. Although it may be updatable, they have never created anything new for the machine and you would be just as well to buy the less expensive model that isn't updatable. Singer promised new and exiting changes and I'm sitting here with a machine that hasn't changed since I bought it and still only does what it did when they first designed the machine. They haven't even added stitch fills which my very basic Brother Embroidery machine had.
The two units (sewing machine and embroidery unit) are large and bulky and the sewing machine is very heavy. Also the machine is supposed to be able to do multiple hoopings for larger designs. I've never had a multi-hooped item turn out like I had envisioned. It could be operator error, but I have done everything they suggested.
There is a huge learning curve with both units, but Singer's Customer Support is great if/when you call needing assistance and can get through to a human.
There are some really neat built in stitches, but when I use the built in embroidery stitches (done without the embroidery unit) the designs wonder and are hard to keep on track. I draw guidelines with an air erase pen, but the foot travels everywhere while creating the design, so it's difficult to figure out where the design is going.
On the plus side, I do like the automatic thread changer for when you are doing embroidery, but the automatic bobbin rewind in the embroidery mode sucks. When you get near the end of the bobbin, the machine wants to wind a new bobbin, but in order for it to do that, it has to go out to the right hand side of your project and stitch off the remaining bobbin thread. NOT something you want to happen while stitching out on an expensive silk or any other project for that matter. Also even though the automatic thread changer is supposed to allow you to walk away while your design stitches out, you still need to hang close because it only changes to the next color.
Also, you need throttle the machine way down in order to get it to embroider properly and even then, you will sometimes have problems (birds nests on the bottom, tearing holes in your fabric).
They sold this unit as having an "automatic thread tensioner". I wouldn't call it that at all. You need to put in a sample piece of fabric and stitch out their tension "star". You have to manually adjust the thread tensions until you get the star to stitch out properly. (It's probably easier to do it the old fashioned way, stitch a straight stitch and check for loops.) Most of the time I have to stitch out their star about five or six "samples" before I get the tension right. And After I have the tension correct (according to their star) I sometimes still have problems with the thread tensions not being correct.
Something else I thought would be pretty neat, is they show their machine as being able to create a stitch that looks hand quilting. Nothing in their manuals or instruction books show how to create this effect. I was told you need to use clear bobbin thread, and mess with the tension, but it isn't an automatic stitch like they lead you to believe. I'm sure if you mess with the tension on any machine, you can eventually get it to the point it will make a "hand quilted" look stitch.
In conclusion, I've pieced together multiple quilts with my machine and created quite a few embroidered projects but I feel Singer really dropped the ball with these units. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy this machine.

10 Spool Embroidery Thread Stand Review

The thread stand is much larger than I anticipated. I suppose it would work but it's too big for my use. It's gray in color..I know, a bit picky but I prefer the white thread holders that are smaller and fit behind the machine. Will be returning it.

Janome Decor Computer DC2010 Sewing Machine Review

(More customer reviews)I really like Janome sewing machines; they are rugged, feature-rich and really excellent for the home sewist. While there are fully-featured models from competing manufacturers that cost half as much, the Janome deliver trouble-free features such as clog-free bobbins and a number of innovations that make sewing a pleasure, for example, a very good feed dog system with seven parts that delivers smooth operation.
The tension is very well made; I had few issues adjusting upper tension and the lower tension seems to react incredibly well--I was trying to abut two adjoining pieces of fabric with a loose fringe-like ladder by loosening the upper tension to almost nil. However, the lower tension adjusted and made a smooth satin-like stitch which actually was not the effect I wanted (I wanted messy loops) but shows that the technology of the Janome bobbin tension is quite remarkable. Not surprising as Janome's fame is their bobbins, and in fact, the name means "Eye of the Dragon" or "Eye of the Snake" and refers to the round bobbin that they invented.
However, the way the machines are marketed makes me delete a star; to get a model with the right "bells and whistles" plus some features I consider "musts" is not easy and you end up having to move up to the most expensive machine in the series in order to get the most versatile model. And the models are revised constantly; wait a year and a whole set is discontinued and a new set with an equally perplexing matrix of features will be introduced. And then there are "commemorative" models that come and go quickly. It's confusing.
The DC2010 is a case in point. If you drop down to the "Magnolia" line, which is a line of starter machines (by the way, suitable for any young sewist to start out on) then you give up a lot of the heirloom stitches that make sewing garments and decorative home linens worth your time. But the Magnolia top-of-the-line 7330 has the option of foot-free start-stop, meaning you can sew and coordinate free quilting without having to press a foot pedal up and down to regulate speed and start-stop. (This is something akin to rubbing your tummy and patting your head. You can do it, but it takes a bit of concentration.)
The DC2010 lacks two other features that make it less than optimal. Firstly, there is no adjustable pressure for the foot. This is a dial on top that makes the presser foot squeeze the fabric onto the feed dogs with more or less pressure and allows you to adapt the pressure for the fabric you are working on (sheer to heavy.) The "Threadbanger" TB-30 has this feature (at a similar price point to the DC2010) and start-start stop as well. You just give up 20 additional heirloom stitches to get this. (So, if you don't like machine ornamental stitches, go look at that model before it's discontinued.)
Secondly, there are only three choices of buttonholes, done in satin stitch. The knit buttonhole and "hand-stitched" buttonhole are missing. Strange, considering this machine has 50 stitches including heirlooms like feather and ladder stitch.
In order to get adjustable pressure and more buttonholes, there is a more expensive machine (DC2160) or you go with the Threadbanger TB-30 and leave off doing darning or heirloom stitching, because the TB-30 has 30 stitches NOT including darning nor many heirloom hem stitches. (You can of course darn by dropping the feed dog and moving the fabric freely with an optional darning foot.)
However, if you aren't as fussy about buttonholes, don't care about adjustable pressure and if you like heirloom stitching and can live with foot-pedal operation only, the DC2010 is machine that delivers a lot for a very reasonable price.
My feeling is that if you can find about fifty percent more to spend, it's worth it to move up to a better machine but if your budget is around four hundred, this is a fantastic home machine and only the foot-free and pressure versus stitch choice would have you choose between the Threadbanger or Decor.
You can spend a lot less on some very widely available mass-marketed machines, but reports of tension problems and overheating during long sewing sessions are common complaints, and if you are serious, you don't need such frustration.
More quibbles; the lower end machines have an accessory box that pulls off the free arm end and is simply two connected tubes in which you store the feet and other accessories. The better machines have the drawer type of accessory box that pulls down in front. I hate pulling off the box just to find a foot. And may I also say that a zipper foot, buttonhole foot, satin stitch foot and regular foot are not a generous number of presser feet. Again, the higher end machines have blind hem and overedge as well. These feet can add up quite a bit when you are outfitting your machine to suit your projects. I like to have a good open toe foot, a darning foot (like a mini embroidery hoop), a button foot (padded open toe that holds a button better than the satin foot) and a walking foot and the blind-hem ditch-stitching foot. Even at discounted prices, this adds up quickly.
Despite these quibbles, I'd recommend this sturdy machine for anyone on a reasonably tight budget who wants a durable, decent machine that makes pretty stitches and can do a lot. For heirloom sewing and quilting, this is a wonderful machine. If you are sewing on a large variety of fabrics that require adjustable pressure, you might try a different model.

Singer CE-150 Futura Sewing-and-Embroidery Machine Review

(More customer reviews)Before my Singer, I had only used a machine twice in my life, so when it arrived, I got a pleasant surprise - I was off sewing within minutes, getting great results and having loads of fun. I especially love that threading is so easy, and you learn quickly where to be careful to avoid thread breakage.
Changing to embroidery unit - no problem, though getting the right foot attached usually takes me a sec. I daringly started off with one of my own Embird designs... without a glitch, even without the use of stabilizer, just straight onto firm cotton.
I love that the machine is easy to use, especially the Futura software. Its 24 standard stitches are more than enough, its embroidery is great. And my absolute favorite is the hoop size! Other machines with a similar (still higher) price tag come with a 4"x4" hoop, this one has two hoops with a maximum of 5"x7". You might not think you will need this, but you will - either when doing multiple designs on one large hoop, or just embroidering longer names.
The manual could be improved at times, but I hardly ever needed it.
I hear people complaining about broken thread - honestly, just like with every machine, you just need to know the Singer's quirks.
During the first 3-5 stitches of every color, hold the upper thread in the back, and no false thread breakage will occur. If it still does, thread the whole thing again and you will be fine. Don't use pre-wound bobbins without stabilizer. It will give you trouble after only 1/3 of the bobbin is empty, and since the bobbin case is plastic, you really shouldn't use metal bobbins either. Just wind your own bobbins when needed, it is easy enough.
Make sure that you use good embroidery yarn; every machine has brands it doesn't like. I am currently extremely happy with the Madeira yarns.
The fact that it needs a computer next to it... You know that before buying, don't you? To me, that is not a disadvantage at all, since I appreciate the large screen, and that I can work in Embird while the machine embroiders, preparing the next project.
It really is an awesome machine for that price. In Europe, the only difference between the 150 and the 250/350 are the number of stitches and which software is included.
Since I am using Embird, I really needed nothing except the Futura software to send designs to the machine, and 24 stutches is more than enough for what I do.
I highly recommend the machine - I am utterly in love with it.

I bought mine on sale and I am VERY happy with it, however I think that I would be disappointed with it had I paid full price. After using it for the last 6 months to sew, I am in the market for an embroidery machine now.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this machine because I wanted to learn to do machine embroidery and didn't want to spend a fortune. I think it is an excellent value. It seems very solid and sewed beautifully with no adjustments straight out of the box. There are sensors in the thread path that are very sensitive and incorrectly report broken thread quite often. As soon as I got the hang of flossing the thread into the sensors this became less of a problem. There are several yahoo groups dedicated to machine embroidery and the nice people there were of great assistance to me as I got started.
Folks like me who are new to machine embroidery should understand that the sewing machine must be physically attached to a computer while you are embroidering. The soft ware running the computer sends the information to the sewing machine one color at a time so don't think that you can download the design and then sew it out later. You are going to need a computer to run the embroidery feature of this machine. I'm using an old computer that was discarded at my office because it was too slow to run large office programs over a network. I took all the other software off and it runs the Future software just fine. If you are going to need to acquire a computer to run your embroidery machine you should consider that cost along with the price of the Futura.
Thread is the paint of embroidery and since it is different than regular thread you are also going to have to make an investment in thread to get started. The price of a spool can vary greatly but if you buy a bunch at one time it can be pricy so think about this to when deciding to make the plunge into machine embroidery.
The difference between the Futura 250 and the Futura 350 is the software. If you plan to create your own embroidery designs you should know that only the basic software comes with the 250 but you can purchase the full software separately. Making clip art into machine embroidery is much more difficult than I first thought and to run the Futura software the sewing machine must be connected to the computer even if you are just working on the design and not doing the actual sewing. There are other software packages that do not have this requirement. You could use them to make the art into embroidery files but you will still need to be connected to your Futura to stitch them out.
I am extremely happy with this product and would recommend it to other people like me who just want to have some fun and spice up their craft and sewing projects. If you are looking to do embroidery professionally then purchase a higher priced and faster machine.
