It has the standard support pipe with the half ball on top, but instead of going in the standard semi circular socket, the ball is held by the upper shroud cover. The upper shroud is held by a proprietary plate that is screwed to the supports in the ceiling. In fact if you put the upper pipe ball in an existing standard support socket, the cover shroud is too shallow reach the support plate for you to put in the side screws. The support plate has a hook for you to put one of the screw holes of the cover shroud on the hook and hang the fan while you connect the wires. I suppose that is to make up for not being able to use the standard semi-circular socket support.
The instructions spend more ink on warnings than on installation. So, I would caution those who are not experienced do-it-yourselfers.
The blades appear to be some kind of plastic. There is a small ridge on the top of the blades which I assume is to reduce dust buildup. The fan does not come with a light kit, but the wiring is there, and there is a matching light available at Home Depot where I got the fan.
The fan runs quietly with no sound other than the wind. There is absolutely no motor hum or noise. My fan required no balancing; it ran perfectly smooth as installed.
It is rated for outdoor use. It comes with wires long enough to accommodate a three-foot pole. It has three speeds with air volume specified as 1,848 CFM at 11 watts; 3,632 CFM at 29 watts; and 5,716 CFM at 63 watts. It won't blow your wig off, but it does stir up a decent breeze. It would be nice if it had a higher speed up in the 7,000 CFM range.
I got it at Home Depot for $100. Considering its smooth and quiet performance, it's a pretty good value.
