(More customer reviews)My wife needed a simple basic sewing machine to repair and make adjustments to our clothes. We decided on this model based on the low price and the Singer name. As we understand there are more Singer machines in service than all other brands together.
We found the DVD that came with the machine very helpful and between that and the owner's manual the setup was easy. Since then she is using it from time to time and, as it fulfills all our needs at an affordable price, we must give it a high rating.
We would have hated to pay more for a sewing machine with more features that we were not going to use. This is a good reliable machine that fulfills our need for simplicity and ease of operation.

Brother PE-400D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine Review

(More customer reviews)A previous reviewer left a comment that the hoop is on the wrong side. There is a valid reason for this. Unlike her PE-150, this machine is also a sewing machine. In order for this machine to function as a sewing machine, the embroidery arm has to be removable (so it is on the left side). If it was on the other side, it would be in the way for sewing.
The other major advantage of the PE-400D over the 150 (besides being able to sew), is that it is able to read and use the Disney Brother cards. These cards can only be used by Disney Brother machines.

Brother XL3510 72-Stitch Function Free-Arm Sewing Machine Review

(More customer reviews)Though the Brother XL-3510 wasn't my first choice in a machine (purchased out of a limited selection from an online retailer using a "store credit only" return policy, even for defective machines), after a marathon weekend of sewing medieval garb, I have found this to be a solid machine that handles a wide range of projects effectively and efficiently. With a drop in bobbin (SA156 is the Brother part number--same as their sewing/embroidery machines) that is oriented a little too much towards the right handed (I'm a left handed person), it's much easier to manage than the Europro I returned to the online retailer that uses a steel bobbin and bobbin case from the side. Threading is easy as well, though left handed people will have problems for a few times until you get used to the nuances of the threading. There are about 3 or 4 places that I found the machine difficult to manage as a left handed person. Sadly, as strong as Brother is, for both the industrial and home sewing markets, they have forgotten that both left handed and right handed people use the machines!!
I really like the way the stitch selector dial works. Just like a shift key on a computer, you just put the outer dial on the red SS1 for the red row of stitches or the green SS2 for the green row of stitches--it's very user friendly. Normal stitches are neither red nor green--for things like straight or zig zag. Everyday stuff like back-stitching is easy (easier than many models) and the machine doen't balk at you when you want to go through a few thicknesses of fabric like pleats. As with any machine, you might have to coax it a little by a tug or two on a stubborn section through the feeders, but I've never known a machine that always could feed anything without a little help now and again.
All in all, thie machine passes the test. It works very nicely and should be a great addition to anyone's sewing room. I'm not an expert seamstress, but I've sewn to some degree since I was six and used many many machines along the way. This machine was a good buy--but for the future I will ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT before buying ANY MACHINE--it really DOES MATTER WHO YOU BUY FROM AND WHAT THE RETURN POLICY IS.
READ THE RETURN POLICY--EVERY WORD--BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING--THIS IS EXTRA IMPORTANT FOR SEWING MACHINES.
This is a great machine. I didn't buy mine on amazon. I really wish I did.

Brother(R) VX1435 Mechanical Sewing Machine Review

(More customer reviews)I got this machine a year ago as a beginning sewer. I really loved it and was able to learn and make many things with it. I discovered and confirmed that sewing was going to be my 'thing'. I did not want my husband buying anything too expensive or fancy just in case I ended up not liking to sew.
Its a basic model and I don't need all of the fancy extras anyway. But now a year later, as my sewing confidence is growing and I am moving on to try new things, the machine stopped working right. There is some sort of problem with the thread. Its not the tension, I have tried everything. We have oiled and dusted it, changed thread, bobbins and fabric. The manual is terrible and not very helpful. The machine still runs but after a few stitches, the thread either breaks or comes out.
It may be a simple problem to fix but not something we can figure out. Since my husband got it for so cheap (and even on sale) he decided to get me a new one instead of paying to have this machine repaired.
We got a Husqvarna Emerald for $299. (a basic model) There is no comparison in how it runs its sturdier and even though its a basic model it has many nice extra features and the manual is great.
Having said that, there is no way that one year ago I'd have wanted a $300 machine not knowing if I would like sewing or not.
The Brother worked great and was easy to learn on, I just think it should have lasted longer than a year. 3 Months ago I probably would have given this 5 stars. Thats how happy I was with it until I started having these frustrating problems. (and an added note...a Husqvarna never needs oiling! How about that?)

(More customer reviews)First of all, shipment was really fast! Secondly, this embroidery hoop is great and does a whole lot more than the small or medium Brother hoop. I was able to embroider a 5-foot sign for an upcoming craft faire in just a couple of hours! It would have taken way much longer if I had used the medium hoop that came with the machine.

Brother ES2000 77 Stitch Function Computerized Free Arm Sewing Machine Review

(More customer reviews)This machine is very similar to the popular CS 6000 that's sold both here in Amazon and in Walmart. In fact they both use the same manual. The difference between the 2 are: CS6000 has an start/stop button so you can operate the machine w/o foot pedal, quilting accessories such as walking foot and larger table extension, needle up/down button, faster bobbin winding, 2 speeds, a hard cover and some extra fancy stitches. I don't care about these missing features. I sewed my own cloth cover using left over fabric. To me this little machine has all the functionality that I ever wanted from a sewing machine. All the utility stitches are there - sewing buttons and button holes (1-step), zippers, elastic, overlock, zig zag, satin, blah blah blah - everything you need to sew a dress or a pillow case, plus more. If you quilt a lot buy the CS6000 one. Threading is super easy because the direction is printed right on the machine. The automatic needle threader is very helpful. I use it every time. My only complaint is that the thread tends to slip out of the needle hole unless I leave a very long "tail". This happened w/ CS6000 too when I tried it at a friend's house. With both models you can specify if the needle is left up or down when sewing stops. Both needs no oiling (probably mostly plastic parts?) I haven't sewed very heavy fabric yet. The LED light is very dim but cool. You definitely need a real lamp nearby. You can leave the machine on for a long time because the light uses very little energy. If you do turn it off, all the custom stitch settings will be lost (no memory). So far I am very happy with this machine.

I am about halfway done a baby quilt and have really enjoyed sewing again. I think that if the machine hadn't worked so nicely I would have been frustrated. I haven't sewn enough to really know how to fix problems. The instruction manual was easy to follow and at one point when the tension wasn't right, the manual provided me what I needed to fix it.... I have a friend who sews regularly who recommended this to me and I have been exremely happy.....

I bought this "little" machine as a "back up" and it is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to buy a bottle of sewing machine oil to oil it weekly (as the manual advised) otherwise it came fully equipped and it just purrs right along and does a great job of sewing on a variety of fabrics. I'm VERY HAPPY and it was 1/6 the price of Brother digital dud.

(More customer reviews)This is a great machine for the price. I am teaching my teenage daughter to sew and she is turned off by my clunky old Singer. So I keep that around for the tough jobs and use this new Brother for the light weight stuff.
The only major limitation of this machine is that it can't really handle heavy weight fabrics or multiple layers very well. There is no presser foot adjustment, so the foot can only be raised so much, and can't be adjusted for variable feed, depending on fabric thickness. There is only one setting. That means you need to use plenty of pins, and keep the old Singer around for the heavy duty stuff. Otherwise, a fun little machine.
